Today is Saturday - when I was in my 20's Saturdays were a lot different than they are now. Back then all I had to worry about was myself. I would most likely sleep in til about 10 or 11 due to staying out late on Friday night. Even when I was in graduate school I usually wouldn't do any studying until later in the day - which was usually cut short around 8 or 9 p.m. when it was time to go out on the town again.
Now, Saturdays are so full of activity and things to do that it feels like a roller coaster ride. I lose all track of time because I am so unbelievably busy. Right now I should be lying on the couch and reading the paper instead of writing this blog, but oh well. I can't seem to sit still or relax for more than a few minutes anymore. What has happened to me???
Here is how my day has been so far:
7:00 - Alarm goes off, hit snooze and go back to sleep.
7:15 - Alarm goes off again. Grumpily get out of bed and start barking commands at the kids to get their clothes on and get downstairs. Attempt to ignore the complaints of "I don't want to go to Ukie school!"
7:45 - Dressed and downstairs to get various things in order: breakfast, lunch for Ukie school, putting Ukie homework in backpacks, organizing stuff for Plast into a bag and a large plastic bin. (Plast is Ukrainian scouts for those of you not in the know)
8:40 - Scolding self and kids for leaving house late for Ukie school yet again. Secretly smile when Jack says he likes being late to Ukie school. Been there, done that - I know how he feels.
9:20 - Drop kids off at Ukie school.
9:30 - 10:15: Catch up with friends in Ukie school cafeteria.
10:30 - 12:30: Spend a few hours at my parents' house visiting my dad. Receive an entire overview of their bank accounts, usernames and passwords for every account they have ever created, insurance policies, doctor's names, etc. - in case I should ever have to take over the estate. Joke around with my dad about how he should make monthly transfers into my bank account so I can quit my job and go to Europe. Discuss a new plan for documenting his method for making music - a project that sounds both promising and intriguing. This was probably my favorite part of the day - I like it when it's just me and my dad because we talk about all kinds of interesting things.
12:45 - back on the road to Ukie school
1:00 - 2:15: Plast activities - in charge of 5 little girls ages 5 - 7 who are wildly energetic and constantly moving. Find success in having them play "Marco Polo" for about 15 minutes, but change the words to "Zozulka Hotuys". All goes well until Ella runs blindfolded right into a potted plant. Spend the rest of the time working on little books entitled "Xto ya?" - translated means "Who am I?" Who am I indeed - I don't even know the answer to that question.
2:25 - on the road again, this time to baseball practice which Jack insists we will now be late for. Ukie school he doesn't mind being late for, but anything sports related, forget it.
2:55 - stop by the house since Jack suddenly realizes he forgot something.
3:00 - we make it to baseball practice without a minute to spare. whew!
3:15 - 4:15 - back home but no rest for the weary since I have paperwork to catch up on for work. Drink a coke and work on a new patient evaluation, all the while trying to ignore the disaster that is my house.
4:30 - back to baseball practice to pick up Jack. Write down all players names and the numbers on their new jerseys they got today.
5:15 - back home, on computer to enter all names and numbers onto the banner that must be ordered ASAP for the Little League opening ceremony which will take place next Friday. Click "purchase" and it's done. Whew - another crisis averted. God forbid they should be banner-less at the ceremony - what would happen then???
5:45 - Still sitting at computer - decide to write entry for blog and here we are. This is actually enjoyable for me so I do consider it a form of relaxation. However - Ella keeps interrupting me with questions so the relaxed feeling doesn't last very long.
6:15 - About to publish post for blog and anticipating a well-deserved dinner out at Glory Days Grill - where the kids and I will eat wings, have some dinner and watch the first part of the Caps game. This is our reward for a very busy day.
So there you have it. Sometimes I think weekends are even busier than weekdays - but really, I wouldn't have it any other way. I have to sit back sometimes and remind myself that this is the very best time of my life. It may be hectic but at the end of the day, it feels good to have such an energetic and busy family. It means that we are doing something right.
