Out of the Mouths of Babes: I'm Too Sentimental

A few weeks ago I wrote about the bittersweet fact that this was the last year that my kids would be in the same school together. I described how I would stand at the window and watch them walk down the street, side by side, not realizing how precious these moments are.

The following conversation I had today with Jack and Ella really drove home the fact that I am the only one who is emotionally affected by this inevitable end of the way things are.

Me: You know, tomorrow is the last day the two of you will ever walk to school together. EVER.

Ella: What? (giggle)

Jack: You know, Mom, we only started walking to school together this year. It's not that big a deal.

Ella: Yeah! (giggle)

Me: It IS a big deal. These are special moments. You'll look back on them someday and realize it.

Jack: Whatever.

Ella: Yeah, whatever! (giggle, giggle)

Me: When you're a parent, you'll understand. These types of moments are very important.

Jack: You know what's important to me? Ice cream.

I guess I'll have to wait until they become parents before they get it.
