Well, I was so inundated with snow days and being sick last week I totally forgot to do my week in review last week. So here goes . . .
1. Chaos in Cairo: So this has been the big story in the headlines all week - the political crisis in Egypt. Every day it just looks worse over there. Violence, chaos, you name it - I would not want to be in that area of the world right now. The photos they plaster all over the front page are of course the worst pictures ever - today they have this shirtless guy on the front page apparently screaming as his "binding are adjusted" - he looks like he's being tortured. Apparently an angry mob surrounded Anderson Cooper the other day and he was punched in the head several times. There seems to be no end in sight to all of this. It's one of those news stories where I feel like I don't know enough about what's going on and I really need to open the newspaper's front page and continue reading instead of jumping to the Style section like I usually do.
2. It's never dull in home health care: There must be a full moon this week. I've gotten the strangest assortment of new patients. Due to patient confidentiality laws I really can't give too many details - but let's just say I've been in some really interesting situations. There's the guy with dementia who apparently slipped on black ice the day before I arrived to see him and ended up with a nasty laceration on his leg. His poor wife didn't know how to change the dressing and since a nurse wasn't ordered I ended up having to do it. Not for the weak of heart, that's all I'll say about that. Then there's the 94 year old man whose family is worried because his 96 year old "girlfriend" who lives next door in the senior living building insists that they walk arm in arm into the dining room - well, neither of them has the balance to do this safely so they are literally hanging onto each other for dear life. It's only a matter of time before one of them starts going down and pulls the other down too. Oh, and he doesn't want to use a cane because it makes him "look old." Hello - you're 94 years old! I hate to break it to him, but I think that's considered old. Although, more power to him if he thinks he's not old. Maybe that's how come he's made it this far.
3. Ella is keeping a diary: We found a notebook the other day where Ella is writing about her day. It's the cutest thing I've ever seen. Since she's just learning how to read and write, the words are spelled the way they sound to her, so sometimes it's a little hard to figure out what she's writing. My favorite word she writes is "wif". In case you don't know what that means, it's "with" - she still can't say her "th" sound and it comes out sounding like "f". So unbelievably cute!!!
4. Jack is trying out for the talent show: As we speak Jack is in the middle of a mob of kids at his school trying out for the talent show. I don't think they realized how many kids were going to show up to this thing. John checked on him about 30 minutes ago and it was still chaotic over there. Jack seems really excited about it - he's planning to play a piece on the piano. He loves this song so much that he can play it without the notes in front of him. I'm wondering what other talents these kids are going to come up with. Should be interesting.
5. Exercise routine stalled: Not sure what happened here - but my effort at going to the gym has been sidetracked by a respiratory virus and several ice and snow storms. I miss my boot camp buddies - it's just not the same when I can't secretly make fun of people in the class while working up a sweat. I did manage to get in there on Monday to run on the treadmill - I have about a month and a half to go before I have to run 5 miles in the half marathon. So far I can barely run 3 miles - hmmmm. Hopefully the groundhog's prediction is right and spring is coming - I need to get some outdoor running in to get myself in the mood.
So that's the week - more stuff happened - but I really need to do some other things right now, like pay a bunch of bills. Oh, and finish my tax return so I can pay all those bills!!
