A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That

It's been a while since I've written. Not sure why. Every time I think of something to write about it seems like too much work so I don't do it. Again, forgetting that the whole reason I started this blog was just to get my thoughts down and create an outlet for all the stuff swirling around in my head. I don't need to focus each post around a theme.

So in light of this realization I'm just going to write about some random stuff that's been going on - in no particular order of importance.

Child in an Envelope
A few months ago I wrote about how I put together a colorful portfolio of my little girl's academic potential in order to have her considered for the Advanced Academic Program at her school. It's funny - they changed the name years ago from Gifted and Talented (GT) to Advanced Academic Program (AAP) - yet the kids all still refer to it at "GT". I received a plain envelope in the mail a few days ago that stated that my child had not been accepted into AAP. Bummer. I almost wish I could ask for that big manila envelope back - I feel like it contained a piece of my kid and I want it back!!

Interestingly I thought I'd be more disappointed if she didn't make it in. I had a momentary dagger-like feeling when I read the letter. How could they not see what I see - a motivated, engaging, quietly focused child who loves to read and draw and sing enthusiasticallly when no one is watching? Would she be disappointed when I told her that she didn't make it in?

Her response when I gently broke the news that she would not be in AAP next year:

"YES!" followed by a fist pump and then "What a relief!!"

Okay then. If she's not disappointed then neither am I. I think she'll be just fine.

Running
The foot saga continues. I've been sidelined by achy feet since the end of March. I took a long break from running to allow my arches and my joints to calm down. I've ultrasounded, massaged, stretched and iced the heck out of them for weeks. I even went to a physical therapist who didn't do much besides a few minutes of some manual techniques that didn't seem to have any effect and the suggestion to "put some inserts in your running shoes", basically ignoring the fact that this all started when I PUT INSERTS INTO MY RUNNING SHOES. Ugh.

I miss running. Did I jinx myself when I wrote that gleeful post about how I finally felt like a runner? I never realized how much I was enjoying running until I couldn't do it. Never mind that the days have been gloriously perfect days for running or that I seem to see runners everywhere I turn. I just want to run!

I went for a test run a few days ago when we were in Philadelphia visiting my sister and her family. I couldn't stand it anymore - I had to give it a try. I managed to eak out 2 miles and felt pretty good, although 24 hours later the achiness intensified. Guess I'm not ready.

I'm a runner. I just can't run. This too shall pass (at least this is what I keep tellling myself).

Planking
Since I can't run I needed to find another outlet for my energy. A friend of mine recently started a friendly daily plank competition on Facebook - how long can you hold a plank? This sounded like a great idea - so I started planking. So far my longest plank is about 2:04 minutes. This doesn't sound like much - but try it yourself and you'll see that it's not easy. After about 30 seconds everything starts to burn. You want to quit, but the stopwatch staring you in the face is saying "Keep going!"

I've added another element to it by challenging my 11 year old son to plank with me. Keep in mind that he is like one big bundle of muscle - all lean tissue and zero fat on that lanky body of his. Last night he planked for a full 3 minutes. As if that wasn't enough he then got on the floor and did 43 situps in one minute. Show-off.

My husband walked in while we were planking and laughed. But then the competitive spirit got to him too and he ended up on the floor in his own plank. So far Jack and I have him beat. Should be interesting to see how far this planking goes.

If you're reading this, scratching your head and thinking "What the heck is a plank?" here it is:

This is the forearm version

Earplugs Are Not a Snack
I'll end this post on a ridiculously funny note. Occasionally I wear earplugs when I sleep to combat the irritating snoring sounds coming from my husband. One night last week the snoring was particularly annoying so I put the soft blue earplugs in my ears and drifted off to sleep.

At some point during the night, I was dreaming that I was chewing on something soft. I woke up and groggily wondered to myself what the heck I was chewing on. I opened my mouth, reached in and pulled out not one, but both earplugs! So disgusting. I can only imagine myself inexplicably pulling the earplugs out of my ears in my sleep and then sticking them in my mouth. Why????? I will never know. Needless to say I was completely grossed out and thankful that I didn't choke on them in my sleep. I gave my whole family a good laugh the next day when I recounted the story.

Moral of the story: If you wear earplugs at night, don't go to bed hungry.
