It's 5 o'clock somewhere! Wait - it's 5 o'clock right now - that calls for a well-deserved Friday happy hour drink. Be right back . . .
Ok - that's better. A nice Dos Equis to start off the weekend. Now I can relax and look back on another interesting week. Never a dull moment . . .
Out of the Mouths of Patients
Ok - so usually I do Out of the Mouths of Babes to talk about the ridiculously funny things my kids say, but occasionally this applies to my patients. I got a new one this week who is a real character, and no, he is not one of the Richards. Here is a conversation we had on Wednesday during our first visit together. This should give you a pretty good idea of what I'm dealing with.
Me: So, Mr. Smith (not his real name), have you had any falls in the past six months?
Mr. Smith: Naw, not really.
Mrs. Smith: Yes, you have! He's fallen three times.
Me: Three times?
Mrs. Smith: Yes, he fell three times last November.
Mr. Smith: Oh, yeah, well I did fall off a ladder.
Me: A ladder?? (as I think to myself that this man should definitely NOT be climbing ladders)
Mrs. Smith: yes, and he also fell right over here by the fireplace and hit his head on the corner.
Me: How did that happen?
Mrs. Smith: He got up and lost his balance, must have tripped or something.
Mr. Smith: No, I was drunk.
Oh, boy. Well, at least he's honest. As I delved more into this fall, I came to find out that Mr. Smith is a recovering alcoholic and has not had an actual drink in ten years. He had been eating a box of chocolates that were filled with liquor and for some inexplicable reason ended up eating the entire box on an empty stomach and actually got drunk! And then he fell down. This is not a typical response to my "have you fallen?" question. I can't wait to hear what he says next.
Cabinet Progress
As you know, I've been slowly scraping, sanding and re-painting my 1960's kitchen cabinets. This is a slow and painstaking process but it's coming along. I've learned that when I'm sanding I have to protect myself against the dust, so here is how I look when I'm on the job . . .
Yes, I know, I look ridiculous. I can see now why my kids try to steer their friends away from the kitchen when I'm hard at work.
As I've been working on these cabinets, I've discovered that we don't make the best use of our storage space. For this particular section I had to remove several drawers in order to get the job done. This drawer is a perfect example of wasted space . . .
I can't believe we have devoted an entire drawer in our kitchen to beer huggies. I'm not even sure where some of these came from. Some are obviously from bars or events that we attended in more care-free times. The ones that crack me up the most are the "Wait, I'm trying to imagine you with a personality" and "I can ignore you for as long as it takes." I have a feeling that we picked these up at a convenience store during a trip in which we (gasp!) must have forgotten to pack the beer huggies! Heaven forbid our beers get warm!!
I think it's time to purge the beer huggie drawer. Don't worry, John - I'll save some for our trips to the beach.
Rainbows Redux
In my last post I wrote about how Jack sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to his little sister Ella while I was away on a girls' weekend last week. (which I still have not written about and at this rate probably won't since I drank too much Friday night and spent Saturday with a hangover from hell) But I digress. I was so touched by Jack's love for his sister I decided I should acknowledge it. I was saying goodnight to him last night and I told him how nice it was to hear that he'd been singing to his sister when I was gone. Here is how our conversation went:
Me: So Jack, I heard that you sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" to Ella when I was gone last weekend.
Jack: Yeah, I always sing that to her when you're gone.
Me: You do?
Jack: Yeah. When you guys leave us at Muma's for the night (grandma's house), I always sing to her there too.
I don't know how much more of this sibling love I can handle. It makes me so happy.
So there you have it - a week of surprises from patients, kitchen drawers and my kids. Happy weekend everyone - I hope it snows a lot tonight but I know it probably won't.
