I finally decided to start this blog for various reasons. One is that I have tried countless times to keep a journal - you know, handwritten in a cute little book covered in fabric with fancy designs - but the truth of the matter is, my handwriting stinks. My hand gets tired after writing for about 2 minutes and my hand can't keep up with my thoughts. Typing, on the other hand, is much faster - thanks to Typing 101 in 10th grade in high school, a class I took in lieu of PE - but that's another story for another time.
The biggest reason for starting this blog, however, is that this past year - the year 2010 - was a year full of life-changing events, both good and bad. I almost wish I'd started writing things down a year ago - because to chronicle what has happened in the past year would be almost impossible. But I guess it's never too late to start. I think I'm going to need this outlet more than ever as we get into 2011, for reasons that will become clear as we move forward.
Why UkaLithian Mama? I toyed around with a variety of blog names to try to find the best one. "Mama" of course is a title which I will have for my entire life, so that will never change. The term "UkaLithian" is something that my family made up years ago when I was still living at home. We used it to describe our family - a lovely 50/50 mesh of Ukrainian and Lithuanian heritage, thanks to my Ukrainian mother and Lithuanian father. It's a made-up word that you will not find in any dictionary. I'm not even sure I remember how we made it up or why, but every now and then the word pops up in conversation during family gatherings and we all know what it means. Maybe one day I'll figure out how to cleverly abbreviate it to fit it on a license plate.
So there you have it. This isn't going to be a blog about motherhood, raising kids in a scary world, living in surburbia or anything like that. This is a place where I'm going to share my observations about life in general, unload my frustrations when I need to, or just share a funny anecdote from my encounters with the human race. Maybe by writing these things down I'll come to know myself better. Who knows - I'm taking this one day at a time.

Good for you Alina! I'm looking forward to reading what is on your mind. : )
I remember where the term Ukalithian came from. It was actually from a classmate I had in high school who came up with the made up term and it stuck! He used to refer to me as the Ukalithian in our science class which made my mixed heritage seem somewhat cool in a not so forgiving environment when you were "different"..
I finally got on here to start reading and I'm glad there are so many posts to catch up on. Though it shows how negligent I've been. You tell a beautiful story!
