Ah, the open road. It has a certain mythical quality to it, the stuff that dreams are made of. Everyone has a secret desire in their hearts to hop in the car, step on the gas and go where the wind may take them. That is, unless you are stuffing your family into a 26 foot RV for three weeks. Not quite everyone's dream.
In four days we will be embarking on the trip of all trips, the infamous cross-country RV trip so many American families like ours dream of taking some day. Everyone I talk to about this says one of two things:
"I've ALWAYS wanted to do that!"
or . . . . . .
"Yeah, I'm never doing that. But have fun!"
This is not the trip for everyone. We will be in close quarters for 23 days, sleeping in 26 feet of space, sharing a tiny closet of a bathroom, driving anywhere from 4-8 hours a day. We mapped out our route to allow for some down time along the way but still, there's no getting away from the fact that we will be driving. A LOT.
But we will see so many things along the way, meet interesting people, have unforgettable moments. I'm thinking the things that will stick with us the most won't be the majestic views of the grandiose national parks we plan to visit (although I'm sure they will be amazing!) but the little moments, the things that happen to us that won't happen to anyone else. Those things remain to be seen - some may be funny, some may be annoying, some may be downright unpleasant. We're ready for it all: the good, the bad and the ugly. Bring it on!
