Catching Up

So far my track record for writing this blog for 2014 is abysmal. Every time I sit down to write something I get sidetracked by something else or I get so overwhelmed by all the things that I want to write about that I end up not writing at all.

So now it's March. Time to catch up on things. Here goes . . .

Punta Cana - Was It Just A Dream?
Just over a month ago John and I went to Punta Cana. For five glorious days and nights we basked in the sun, drank fruity drinks drenched in coconut, breathed in the Caribbean breeze and just plain relaxed. We were waited on hand and foot by our butlers (yes, I said butlers!) named Ruben and Mende who made dinner reservations for us, filled our ice bucket every evening and stocked our room with Dominican rum and beer. Just typing this makes me want to go back.

Side note: I think I'm seeing the reason why I haven't written anything. Just now after I'd typed a few meager sentences, each of my beloved children came to me with some type of request for help. By the time I sat down again to continue twenty minutes had gone by. Now it's almost time to make dinner. Grrrrrr. Serenity now.

Getting back to Punta Cana - I have never been so lazy and relaxed in my life. When we got back I was floating on a cloud for about two days. Everything seemed wonderful. Even though I had to go back to work and the wintry weather was doing its thing, I was calmed by the knowledge that places such as Punta Cana DO exist and can be reached for a surprisingly low price!

Alas, February reared its ugly head and here I am a month later, unable to remember how long it's been since the kids had a full week of school due to all the snow, ice and freezing temperatures that plagued our area -  not to mention the terrifying polar vortex that the weather people just love to talk about. Punta Cana seems to be a distant memory. My small bottle of Dominican rum that we stashed in our suitcase upon our departure is almost gone. If I close my eyes I can ALMOST remember what it felt like to run joyfully through the Caribbean surf.

Countdown to Half Marathon
Amidst all this island hopping and winter weather I've been steadily preparing for the half marathon that I so enthusiastically signed up for back in November. What I failed to realize was that running a long distance race in the spring means training in the dead of winter. My training has been thwarted by snow, ice and that trip to Punta Cana, where I most definitely did not get a long run in. Several times I've been forced to run on the dreadmill at the gym, a ghastly experience if any serious distance is on the schedule. My only saving grace has been the ever-popular cinema room, where you can run on the treadmill while watching a movie. This can be a little tricky since you're basically running in the dark while watching lots of movement on a large screen. For someone like me who prone to bouts of vertigo and dizziness this may not see like the best combo, but I managed to make the best of it. Yesterday I ran five miles while watching "Ace Ventura - Pet Detective".

Last weekend I had to run nine miles. Yes, NINE! Crazy, right? I decided to do it at one of my favorite trails, Burke Lake Park. My plan was to do two loops around the lake. Little did I know that the trail was one giant mud pit. I spent the first three miles picking my way through mud, slush and other nasty stuff. I felt like a wimp when other people ran past, pounding through the mud like it was nothing.

AAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!

Do you see the problem here?????  I wrote the stuff above over a week ago and never finished. No time, no time!!!!!!!

I'm ending this blog post now and starting fresh at a later date (as yet undetermined) when I will actually write a full post in one sitting and stay focused. Unbelievable.

Oh, I did finish the 9 miles that I started writing about up there. At least I finished SOMETHING.
